Industry Converges in D.C. for 2017 Power of Prepaid® Conference

WASHINGTON (June 23, 2017) – The Network Branded Prepaid Card Association (NBPCA) held its 6th Annual Power of Prepaid® Conference at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. this week. This year’s conference highlighted pending legislation, changes to the competitive landscape, and the significant innovation in prepaid as the industry grows.

“We are proud the Power of Prepaid® continues to be the go-to conference for industry debate, collaboration, and networking,” said Brian Tate, CEO and President of NBPCA. “With many changes on the horizon, the prepaid industry is at an inflection point, which led to lively conversations on many of the pressing issues the industry is facing as well as the continued opportunities. This year’s speakers provided insight on topics such as banking innovation, the CFPB prepaid account rule, and security threats.”

Keynote speakers included Congressman Barry Loudermilk (R-GA), Operation Hope CEO John Hope Bryant, MetaBank’s Brad Hanson, Green Dot’s Steve Streit, The Bancorp’s Jeremy Kuiper, and Bank of America’s Alex Liu. Panelists included representatives from Green Dot, Wirecard North America, InComm, Auriemma Consulting Group, Mercator Advisory Group, and the National Consumer Law Center.

“This year’s Power of Prepaid® generated riveting discussion on important topics, helping to take the conference to another level,” added Robert Skiba, Chairman of the NBPCA board and executive vice president at Incomm Inc. “Industry collaboration is crucial when it comes to fostering growth and addressing challenges, and we’re proud to host the industry’s premier event where industry experts, lawmakers, regulators, and others helping to drive the industry can connect in-person.”

NBPCA also presented the annual Terrence P. Maher Prepaid Influencer Award to Walt Henderson, Director of the EFT strategy division at the U.S. Department of Treasury. The award was created in honor of Terry Maher, who served as NBPCA general counsel for eight years until he passed away in 2014.

“Walt has been an avid advocate of prepaid cards, and electronic payments generally, for more than a decade, working to highlight how these products can help unbanked and underbanked consumers,” said Tate. “By launching one of the world’s largest government benefit card programs, he introduced regulators and policymakers to the benefits of prepaid cards and has continued to build on that foundation by managing a comprehensive financial education program with others in the prepaid space. Walt has been an invaluable member of the prepaid community—which is what the Terrence P. Maher Prepaid Influencer Award is all about.”
